Glacial Calves Turn 8 Weeks Old

The puppies have started to go to their forever homes. All the boys have gone to their homes, as has Qaanaaq. By all accounts, all are settling in well and having many new adventures. That leaves five girls, who seem to be more active as a group, maybe trying to make up for their absent siblings. These blog posts will be winding down, with one more post after all the pups have gone to their homes, but you will probably be seeing them on Facebook, and other social media outlets. Glacial Calves Seven Week Update

Unbelievable that in less than a week the puppies will begin to go to their forever homes. They have really blossomed in the past week, with personalities that become more defined with each passing day. They have a number of forays into the greater yard beyond their fenced yard. As they have gained a sense of independence it has become increasingly important to have a couple extra puppy wranglers on hand for the times they fan out in all directions. Reine continues to allow them to feed, and never does more than a limp effort to sweep them away with her head.

Glacial Calves Six Week Update

The puppies are really growing fast now with changes visible everyday. They are getting pretty rambunctious in their play, and getting serious teeth. Reine continues to insist on feeding them her milk whenever she gets a chance, as well as feeding them regurgitated food, just like her wild canid ancestors. They traveled to the vet on Tuesday for exams and vaccinations, where they impressed the doctor and got to experience a couple of new surfaces, handling all with ease. They have been on one tour of the yard outside of their outdoor pen, guided by two humans, Reine, and Ukko. While it was a challenge to get them to leave the security of the pen, once out they got more and more comfortable with it. Ukko started to really interact with them once they were in the open, doling out lessons in submissiveness, as well as appropriate play. P1050950 (1280x960)

Glacial Calves Five Week Update

The puppies have now had a number of trips outside, and had some meals outside. They have been exploring the big stone step and are able to negotiate the two steps to get out and back into the house. They are now eating puppy kibble moistened with a little water and goat milk. Reine still insists on doing some nursing, despite their teeth. She has started to initiate play with them when they have the room of the outside enclosure. P1050762 (1280x960)
