Ukko

CH ‘PR’ Callicoon Ukko

October 31, 2006 to June 29, 2021

Ukko left us on June 29th, and left a huge hole. We had quite a life together. He was my rock and the undisputed pack leader for all the dogs here. He lives on in his offspring and their offspring, and it is always a delight to recognize his qualities in them.

Ukko’s name came from Finnish mythology, where Ukko was the God of thunder, fire, and lightning. He certainly lived up to his name. He taught me the meaning of perseverance. He never gave up trying to get what he wanted, whether it was trying to get into the garden to steal asparagus, or trying to win the heart of lovely female, despite the number of times she nipped him. He was an incredibly smart boy, and very stubborn, but with a huge desire to please, learning faster than I could teach him. His entire body wagged with his tail, and it had a worn out tip to prove it. He had proven his strength and enthusiasm by finishing ahead of multiple two-dog teams in sled races. I will always be grateful to Maria Sommer of Callicoon Chinooks for bringing Ukko into my life. When I asked her for a “plucky” puppy, I had no idea what I would be in for. He turned my world upside down, but he quickly became the best dog ever.
